What are Categories & Topics?

Categories & Topics allow you to structure learning easily, organize your content, and bundle courses together in a category or topic. With Categories & Topics, admins can easily add, edit, and remove the prebuilt topic catalog to match your people’s needs and preferences, making your platform look organized and engaging.

Categories are used for broader themes (e.g., Security)

Topics are used for specific topics within a category (e.g., IT, Safety, Passwords)

For example:

Security (=Category)

> IT (=Topic)

> Safety (=Topic)

> Passwords (=Topic)

How do you create Categories & Topics?

To create a new category, navigate to Admin > Categories & Topics and click New. Choose between a Category or Topic. A Category could for example be Customer Service and a Topic could be Communication.

How do I add Topics to Courses?

After adding Categories & Topics you can start adding them to your content. Navigate to Admin > Learning > Courses.

There are 2 ways to add Topics to courses in this menu:

  • Adding them to existing courses: navigate to the course you want to tag with a specific topic. Click on Edit course and Add topics.

  • You can also add them to existing courses by clicking the check box and clicking the add topics button.

  • When creating new courses: When creating the course, you can add topics in the first page of the course, where you can also find the course cover image and title.

After tagging your courses with a specific topic, they will automatically be grouped into the category that the topic is part of.

Coming back to the example from above:

Security (=Category)

> IT (=Topic)

> Safety (=Topic)

> Passwords (=Topic)

If you tag a course with Safety, it will automatically be part of the category Security.

Where can I find my Categories?

To browse your categories, navigate to Learn. Click on the category you want to browse. On the left side, you can search for a course with a specific topic.
